Student Participates In Human Rights Program

Tahani Afaneh, a third-year student at The John Marshall Law School, gained a new perspective on international law and humanitarian efforts when she participated in the International Humanitarian Law Workshop at Santa Clara University this semester.

"International Humanitarian Law is 75 percent politics and 25 percent law. I recognized that on the last day of the conference when we dealt with an extradition case and were given a hypothetical statute and told to negotiate using United Nations rules. That's when the 75 percent political became obvious," she explained.

The program, hosted by the International Committee of the Red Cross, was open to students by invitation. Afaneh, who was nominated by Associate Dean and Professor Ralph Ruebner, was one of 35 students selected for the program designed to teach law students the fundamentals of international humanitarian law and to provide them with opportunities to work with the material covering various facets of international law, including treaties, in the context of hypothetical, yet realistic, fact patterns.

The program included lectures from nationally- and internationally-recognized leaders. Workshops provided a dynamic setting for students to apply the material covered during the lectures.

Afaneh went into the conference with an international perspective. Her parents are immigrants, and she is a former Peace Corps volunteer and in 2007 she participated in a Peru international rights study trip through The John Marshall Law School. Even with that personal knowledge, Afaneh said the International Humanitarian Law Workshop gave her new perspectives on how leaders are dealing with multiple problems around the globe.
