John Marshall Team Takes Top Honors for Second Straight Year
The John Marshall Law School team of Anselmo Duran and Abraham Sandoval won first place at the 13th annual Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) Moot Court Competition March 14 in New York City. They bested 20 other teams from law schools across the country.
This is the second year the two have won honors. In 2007, Duran and Sandoval took second place in the competition.
As national champions, they received $3,000 from the Hispanic National Bar Foundation, the sister organization of HNBA. They also received a $1,000 prize for the Best Respondent's Brief award, and Sandoval was given the Fifth Place Oral Advocacy award.
Team members Marcos Esparza and Justin Garcia were quarterfinalists. Garcia received the Second Best Oralist award.
The teams were coached by Clinical Professor Damian Ortiz who traveled with them to New York for the competition.
This year's issue dealt with securities fraud. The case argued Valley Stream Investors LLC v. Key Business Edge Inc., a fictitious case modeled after Stoneridge Investment v. Scientific-Atlanta Partners LLC, Inc., and Motorola Inc. which was recently decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
The final round was heard by Judge Arthur J. Gonzalez of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York; Judge Victor Marrero of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York; and Justice Ariel E. Belen, New York Supreme Court-Appellate Division.
