Murillo Presented Kissane Award

Ed Murillo, a January 2008 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, was awarded the $5,000 Kissane Award at commencement ceremonies.

Murillo accepted the award from Paul Kissane, son of John Marshall alumnus Elmer Kissane for whom the award is named. Upon his death, friends and family created the award to honor Kissane, a 1945 graduate, in recognition of his 43 years with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. The award is open to graduates who have an outstanding academic record and agree to accept employment with the office.

Murillo, of Chicago's Southwest side, will receive the monetary award after completing a year as a Cook County assistant state's attorney.

As a student, Murillo has completed more than 15 months as a law clerk for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office working in the Felony Division and the Traffic Division.

In October 2007, the state's attorney's office presented Murillo with the El Humanitario Award in recognition of his contributions as a student-lawyer and his volunteer efforts in the community. The award presentation coincided with the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

"After working for the past few years at the state's attorney's office, I know that I want to stay in public interest law," Murillo said.

At John Marshall, Murillo has been active in the Latino Law Students Association and helped organize the Illinois Latino Law Students Forum in 2007 and 2008.

"When I was in high school, I didn't know an attorney. I only knew about court from TV shows. We hope this program will give high school students some insights into law and encourage them to consider a career in law," Murillo said.
