Open House Nov. 28 at Fair Housing Clinic

The John Marshall Law School Fair Housing Legal Clinic invites faculty and past clinic students to an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

The annual "end of semester" party will also serve as a time for guests to see the new enlarged space the clinic is occupying at 28 E. Jackson.

Alumni and friends of the clinic, including attorneys from Chicago law firms who have worked on several clinic cases, have also been invited.

Discussion of Military Contractors

Author Jeremy Scahill, author of Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army, was a guest presenter Nov. 9, at The John Marshall Law School. His discussion focused on the legal, political and human rights implications of the use of private military contractors in United States foreign policy.

Dorothy Li Receives Honor

Dorothy Li, co-director of the Asian Alliance Program at The John Marshall Law School, displays her Friendship Award from the People's Republic of China for guests at a Nov. 6 reception in her honor. She is joined by Maoming Chu (left), deputy counsel general for the Chinese Consulate in Chicago and John Marshall's Dean John Corkery (right). The Friendship Award is the highest honor given by the Chinese government to a non-citizen. Li has been working on joint endeavors between The John Marshall Law School and the People's Republic of China since 1993. She was nominated for the honor by China's State Intellectual Property Office.

On Nov. 8, he conducted a CLE program for the law firm McAndrews, Held & Malloy on the Proposed New Rules of Professional Conduct in Illinois.

Publications

His interview on the need to revise the Puerto Rico Canons of Ethics will appear in the Puerto Rico Bar Journal Ley y Foro in its November/December issue.

He has been invited to speak about U.S. Supreme Court Justice George Sutherland at a program hosted by Vanderbilt University. The presentation will be part of a three-day program in April 2008: "Judicial Reputation: A Conference on Neglected Justices."

Law Students Celebrate Novemberfest

The Asian Pacific American Law Student Association (APALSA) hosted its "Novemberfest: Celebrating Asian Americans in the Law" on Nov. 16 in the Sargis-Miner Student Lounge. APALSA President Teresa Do welcomed guest speaker Edmond Chang, an assistant United States attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, who presented "Inspiring the Future of Asian American Lawyers."

It was a feast for the taste buds! Students at Novemberfest enjoyed a smorgasbord of dishes from a variety of Asian cultures.

November 19

The Black Law Students Association will meet at 3 p.m. in room 201.

The Criminal Law Society is having a glove drive. The shelter has indicated to them that they always need gloves for all family members. They will be accepting donations in the student lounge.

November 20

The Diversity Committee will meet at 5 p.m. in room 531.

Important date to remember - Annual Holiday Party for all students, staff and faculty - noon, room 3east - traditional holiday dinner - November 26.

Caitlin Groh, the John Marshall Law School representative to the American Bar Association's Law Student Division (ABA LSD), looks over the donations collected in the joint food drive sponsored by the Student Bar Association, Phi Alpha Delta and the ABA LSD. The food was donated to the Chicago Food Depository.
