People's Republic of China Presents National Honor to Dorothy Li
Dorothy In-Lan Wang Li, co-executive director of the Asian Alliance Program at The John Marshall Law School, was honored by the People's Republic of China with its Friendship Award in recognition of her contributions and dedication to China's social and economic development.
She was presented with the honor and hosted at a state dinner in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Sept. 29. Li is one of six Americans of the 50 recipients from around the world selected for the 2007 honor. The presentation was made during China's annual Friendship Week activities.
Li, who has been helping organize John Marshall's outreach in Asia, was nominated by attorneys in the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), the Chinese agency for all patent and trademark approvals in China. The nomination was reviewed by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and authorized by the State Council of the People's Republic of China.
"Since you came to China, you have achieved excellent success through hard work and contributed to the friendly exchanges and cooperation between our two countries," Ji Yunshi, general director of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, wrote to Li. "What you have done has won appreciation and respect of your Chinese colleagues."
Li said she is sharing the award with The John Marshall Law School and SIPO and feels she represented both institutions at the banquet.
"This award is not just mine. I work with wonderful people who have helped me in many respects," Li said. "The program we have with SIPO today is a model for exchanges with China."
The Friendship Award was established in 1991. A total of 899 experts from 56 countries have received the award.
Since 1993 when John Marshall first initiated a joint agreement with SIPO, more than 100 attorneys working for SIPO have either come for training or received LLM degrees through John Marshall's Center for Intellectual Property Law.
Li was born in Shanghai, China, and raised in Taiwan. She earned a law degree from National Taiwan University before immigrating to the United States. She received a degree in library science and an M.B.A. from Dominican University and has taught and lectured at colleges and universities in the United States and China. She was an associate professor of law and associate dean of Library Services at The John Marshall Law School before her retirement from that full-time position in 2006.
Li has used her heritage and language skills to the benefit of The John Marshall Law School. Her work with then Dean Robert Gilbert Johnston, starting with a 1993 trip to China, has led to great inroads into the Chinese legal community. The first delegation from SIPO arrived at John Marshall in 1994, and the exchange of John Marshall faculty and Chinese attorneys has strengthened through a number of initiatives.
Now the law school is also accepting Chinese attorneys in private practice and law students from several Chinese universities. Li has also been responsible for a training program for judges from China's Jilin area in the Manchurian Province.
Li also coordinated John Marshall programs for Chinese attorneys through the Chicago Sister Cities Program and the U.S. State Department.

Dorothy Li accepts the Friendship Award from Vice Premier Li during a ceremony Sept. 29 in Beijing. She was one of six Americans to be given the special honor.

John Marshall Will Train Taiwan's Judges
The John Marshall Law School has entered into an agreement with the Republic of China-Taiwan to train its judges in intellectual property (IP) law.
The Taiwan Judiciary Yuan is finalizing plans to establish a court to deal with intellectual property matters. The judges trained at John Marshall through the Center for Intellectual Property Law will be serving on that court.
John Marshall Law School Dean John E. Corkery signed the joint agreement in Taiwan in late August with Fan Guanlin, secretary general of the Taiwan Judiciary Yuan.
In January 2008, John Marshall will accept the first three judges for IP training.
Also during his visit to Taiwan, Corkery signed an agreement with Soochow University School of Law to accept students interested in earning LL.M. degrees from John Marshall.
A special signing agreement ceremony was held between the two law schools. The first students from Soochow will be enrolled at John Marshall in January 2008.

This is the second law school agreement in Taiwan. In 2004, John Marshall initiated a partnership with the Institute of Technology Law at Chiao Tung University in Taipei, Taiwan.
