John Marshall Graduate Earns Award from American Bankruptcy Institute
Michael Dudek, a May 2007 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, was awarded the American Bankruptcy Institute's 2007 Medal of Excellence in Bankruptcy.
The award is presented to a student who has an accomplished record in bankruptcy law. Dudek was selected from students in the Bankruptcy Law class during the spring 2007 semester.
Dudek said his interest in bankruptcy began when he externed for Judge Bruce W. Black in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division (Chicago).
"Before the externship, I didn't know much about bankruptcy or have any interest in it. Working for the judge, I soon realized bankruptcy encompassed many interesting areas of the law, such as commercial law, as well as interpreting bankruptcy law and the bankruptcy code," he said. "What is most appealing is the challenge involved in bankruptcy law and the opportunity to help people and businesses that are the most financially vulnerable get a fresh start."
Dudek served in Judge Black's courtroom for the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters. He also completed an internship with Cook County Circuit Court Judge Richard J. Elrod in spring 2006. At John Marshall, he was the production editor for The John Marshall Law Review.
Dudek received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Illinois State University. A native of Naperville, he is the son of Jana Sheehan of Naperville and Joseph Dudek of West Chicago.
Jodie Needham, director of Academic Services, presents Michael Dudek with the 2007 Medal of Excellence in Bankruptcy from the American Bankruptcy Institute. He received the award for his outstanding accomplishments in the Bankruptcy Law class.
CSO Program: Relationships with Other Professionals Are Critical to Career Success
The Career Services Office and the Center for Real Estate Law are co-sponsoring a discussion on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 5 to 6 p.m. in room 529. Attendees will hear a lively exchange between attorney James Hochman, of Coman & Anderson PC, and real estate professional James Kaplan, of James Kaplan Companies, Inc., who worked together on many occasions. They illustrate how critical a good working relationship between attorneys and other professionals can be to the success of a transaction.
Students are invited to learn how to achieve career success by recognizing the important roles that other professionals play in transactions. Real estate attorneys and professionals work in a small community. Good relationships make deals happen and advance careers.
Site Visit to the Legacy at Millennium Park
John Marshall students are invited to participate in an Oct. 3 visit to the Legacy at Millennium Park, a 73-story luxury residential tower at 60 E. Monroe St. that will house retail on the first floor and condominiums on the remaining floors. The visit will be from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The tour will begin at the Mesa Development Sales Office, 18 S. Michigan Ave., Suite 700. The project is a unique partnership between the developer, the Art Institute of Chicago and the University Club of Chicago.
Students planning to attend are asked to notify the Center for Real Estate Law by e-mail at 6estate@jmls.edu by Tuesday, Sept. 25.
