John Marshall Graduate Earns Award from American Bankruptcy Institute

Michael Dudek, a May 2007 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, was awarded the American Bankruptcy Institute's 2007 Medal of Excellence in Bankruptcy.

The award is presented to a student who has an accomplished record in bankruptcy law. Dudek was selected from students in the Bankruptcy Law class during the spring 2007 semester.

Dudek said his interest in bankruptcy began when he externed for Judge Bruce W. Black in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division (Chicago).

"Before the externship, I didn't know much about bankruptcy or have any interest in it. Working for the judge, I soon realized bankruptcy encompassed many interesting areas of the law, such as commercial law, as well as interpreting bankruptcy law and the bankruptcy code," he said. "What is most appealing is the challenge involved in bankruptcy law and the opportunity to help people and businesses that are the most financially vulnerable get a fresh start."

Dudek served in Judge Black's courtroom for the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters. He also completed an internship with Cook County Circuit Court Judge Richard J. Elrod in spring 2006. At John Marshall, he was the production editor for The John Marshall Law Review.

Dudek received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Illinois State University. A native of Naperville, he is the son of Jana Sheehan of Naperville and Joseph Dudek of West Chicago.
