John Marshall teams took top honors in other national competitions during the 2006-2007 academic year.
A team won the national Black Law Students Association Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition in March 2007, and competitor Marquis Rice won "Best Oralist" and teammate Alfred Murray II received an honorable mention. The team advanced to nationals after winning the regional round.
A John Marshall Law School team took second place national honors at the 12th annual Hispanic National Bar Association Moot Court Competition in March in Minneapolis competing against 32 teams selected from law schools across the country. Julie Thompson Named Recipient of Lawton Scholarship |
|
Third-year student Julie Thompson was selected as the 2007 recipient of the Samuel T. Lawton Jr. Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship was established in honor of Adjunct Professor Samuel T. Lawton Jr., who taught at The John Marshall Law School for almost 50 years until his untimely death in 2003. Student recipients are selected based on academic standing and an interest and background in environmental, government, local or public service law.
Lawton devoted his career to environmental, government and public service law. He was appointed to the Illinois Air Pollution Control Board and was appointed to the original board of Gov. Richard Ogilve when Illinois passed its first Environmental Protection Act in 1970. He also served on numerous local government boards and commissions, and his private practice also focused on environmental and local government law as well.
Thompson graduated from Michigan State University in May 2004 with a bachelor's degree in English. She is an active member of the symphony orchestra for the Chicago Bar Association where she is a violinist, and a member of the Union League Club of Chicago. At John Marshall, Thompson is a staff writer for Decisive Utterance, the law school's student-run newspaper. She is currently a student extern with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5.
