Alumni Office Program Raises $15,000 for Public Interest Scholarships |
|
The John Marshall Law School Office of Alumni Relations raised $15,000 for public interest scholarships through a silent auction and matching funds.
The auction was part of a reception honoring alumni who are elected officials. More than 100 persons participated in the reception and dinner at the Union League Club on Saturday, March 3.
"This was the first time we've hosted a dinner honoring this particular group of alumni," said Sherri Berendt, director of Alumni Relations. "When we first started planning a program to raise money for public interest scholarships, we couldn't think of a better way to put a face on public service. These alumni who are judges and elected officials give of their time on a regular basis. They are the true examples of what working in the public sector is all about."
The silent auction was a success because of the special efforts of Mindy Usalis and Lisa Johnson, John Marshall students who work part time in Alumni Relations. They solicited gifts from alumni, faculty and businesses. Gifts included everything from tickets for sporting events to gift baskets filled with promotional pieces for favorite television programs, such as "Desperate Housewives."
The dinner and auction raised $10,000, John Marshall Board of Trustees Ron Riskin and Joseph Domitrz generously donated $5,000 in matching funds.
"We know that students graduate law school with tremendous debt and doing public service work is a big sacrifice for them," said William K. Beach, a former associate dean and now a development consultant to The John Marshall Law School. "We are excited to have this scholarship money available to students."
Guest speakers for the Elected Officials Reception (from left) George Scully (J.D. '81), member of the Illinois House of Representatives, and Kathleen Clark (J.D. '98), executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Better Housing, Inc., are welcomed to the March 3 event by Alfred E. Gallo, president of the John Marshall Law School Board of Trustees; Patrice Ball-Reed, president of the John Marshall Law School Alumni Association; and John E. Corkery, acting dean.
John Marshall Law School alumni serving the public include (from left) Illinois House member Franco Coladipietro; DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett; former Chicago alderman and now Cook County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Murphy; Western Springs Village Trustee and Lyons Township Trustee Russell Hartigan; Illinois House member George Scully; DuPage County Judge Kenneth Moy; Niles Village Trustee Louella Blaine Preston; and Cook County Commissioner Tony Pereica.

John Marshall Delegation Heads to China |
|
A delegation of judges and law school representatives will be traveling to China March 21 through 31 for a special commencement ceremony and instruction for Chinese judges and attorneys.
Delegation members include John E. Corkery, acting dean of the law school; Dorothy Li, co-director of the law school's Asian Alliance Program; Richard Gruner, incoming director of John Marshall's Center for Intellectual Property Law; and the U.S. District Court Judges Matthew Kennelly, Charles Kocoras and Micheal Mihm with Collins Fitzpatrick, circuit executive for the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.
"Judges and attorneys in China are anxious to get insights from our esteemed judges," Li said. "Their remarks have been translated so that not only the people invited to the programs but others interested in United States law can learn from them. The papers will be circulated to a wider audience."
Before they leave, the delegation will be honored by the Chicago Consulate of the People's Republic of China at a farewell dinner marking their special initiative.
The first order of business for the John Marshall delegation will be the March 23 commencement ceremony for 11 Chinese attorneys who completed the LL.M. in intellectual property law degree in December. They were students from the Chinese Intellectual Property Training Center of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO).
The John Marshall Law School first initiated its partnership with SIPO in 1993. To date, more than 200 Chinese attorneys, including more than half of the staff attorneys at SIPO, have completed training or degrees at the law school. The reach of John Marshall has also been extended beyond its initial Beijing location to include attorneys from Shanghai and Jilin Province.
The judges will deliver comments on intellectual property law enforcement in China and the U.S., Enforcement of Judgments, Judicial conduct, discipline and security of judges, and Alternative dispute resolution in the USA.
Other Beijing stops for the delegation include a visit to the Supreme People's Court, First Intermediate People's Court and the National Judges College; a meeting with faculty and students at China University of Political Science and Law; and a meeting at the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs.
The delegation will fly to Shanghai on March 29 for a three-day stop that will include visits at the Shanghai High People's Court and East China University of Politics and Law.
Corkery and Li have also finalized agreements with three law firms in Beijing and a business and U.S.-based law firm in Taiwan that will place John Marshall students specializing in intellectual property law as summer interns. Students are being interviewed now for that program.

Richard Gruner Named Director of John Marshall's Center for Intellectual Property Law |
|
The John Marshall Law School in Chicago announces the appointment of Richard S. Gruner as professor of law and director of the law school's Center for Intellectual Property Law.
Gruner will be responsible for academic and program initiatives relating to the joint J.D./LL.M. in intellectual property (IP) law for law students; the LL.M. in IP law for the practicing attorneys wishing to specialize; and the M.S. degree for non-attorneys working in the field.
Intellectual property law courses address national and international laws dealing with patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, rights of publicity, uses of trademarked and copyrighted images on the Internet, music licensing, gaming law and unfair competition.
"I am pleased to have Richard Gruner joining our Center for Intellectual Property Law staff," said John E. Corkery, acting dean of The John Marshall Law School. "His expertise in intellectual property law has given him a national reputation among his peers. We know that he will serve as an outstanding director of the center and of its programs."
Gruner joins the John Marshall staff in July, although he is traveling to China March 21 through 31, 2007, with Corkery and Dorothy Li, co-director of the Asian Alliance Program, where they will meet with IP attorneys and representatives of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) in Beijing. The John Marshall Law School has partnered with SIPO for more than 10 years training China's state IP attorneys in U.S. and international IP law. Corkery will present diplomas to SIPO staff who recently completed the LL.M. degree in intellectual property law.
Gruner, a faculty member at the Whittier Law School in Costa Mesa, Calif., since 1983, has taught courses in patent law, computers and law, corporate law and white collar crime.
Before joining academia, Gruner was inside counsel to the IBM Corporation. He has also served as a consultant to the U.S. Sentencing Commission concerning corporate sentencing standards.
He is the co-author of Intellectual Property in Business Organizations: Cases and Materials, a 2006 text that addresses the growing role of intellectual property in the founding, growth and disposition of business enterprises, and Intellectual Property: Private Rights, the Public Interest, and the Regulation of Creative Activity being published later this year.
In 2006, Gruner wrote the article "Corporate Patents: Optimizing Organizational Responses to Innovation Opportunities and Invention Discoveries," rated by the editors of Intellectual Property Law Review as "One of the Best on Intellectual Property" published in 2005-2006.
Gruner has a bachelor's degree from the California Institute of Technology, a J.D. degree from the University of Southern California Law School, and an LL.M. degree from Columbia University Law School. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Irvine.
