John Marshall Welcomes Two Czech Republic Students

This semester, The John Marshall Law School is hosting two students, Lenka Cervenkova and Petra Novotna, from Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, as part of its on-going cooperative agreement with the university.

At John Marshall, Cervenkova is in Torts, Conflict of Laws, and Public International Law classes.

Cervenkova will graduate in spring 2007 and has an interest in European Union and international law. She hopes to find a position that will allow her to gain three years experience that are necessary before taking the Czech equivalent of the bar exam. She is also considering earning a degree in economics.

Cervenkova is being hosted by RoseMarie Knight. This is her second time in Chicago. She worked for a summer in Ohio three years ago and made a short trip to Chicago. That visit convinced her to make a return trip, and when she learned about the John Marshall Student Exchange Program she was very much interested. When her parents visited in September, Cervenkova said the family enjoyed many of the sites around the city.

Novotna is making her first trip to the United States. After studying law in Dijon, France, for a school year, she applied for the Czech program scholarship, as one of her aims had been to research on the cross-border insolvency from the U.S. perspective for her master's thesis.

At John Marshall she is taking Corporations, Commercial Law, Contracts, Lawyering Skills and International Business Transactions classes, and when she returns to Europe, she will complete a master's degree in spring 2007 and go on for an LL.M. in Belgium in European legal studies. She hopes to hopes to start her legal studies in a Ph.D. program at Masaryk University next year.

Novotna was pleasantly surprised by the networking for attorneys in the U.S. There is nothing comparable in the Czech Republic. With limited attorneys' positions, networking could prove to be a great benefit, she said.

Attorney Sheila Murphy is hosting Novotna, and she and her husband recently took Novotna and Cervenkova to San Francisco for a short visit. The two women will return to the Czech Republic in time for the holidays.
