Carlos Mercuriali knows that the LL.M. in intellectual property (IP) law he earned at The John Marshall Law School has opened the door to a new career for him.
Today he is in training for his new position as regional attorney for Latin America for Motorola, Inc. based in Libertyville, Ill. Mercuriali will be the legal advisor for Motorola offices throughout Latin America. Having an LL.M. degree from the United States made his job search much more productive.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for me," he said, "and I'm excited to work for a cutting-edge technology company. My LL.M. degree from an American law school really made a difference."
Mercuriali of Buenos Aires, Argentina, has been practicing intellectual property law the past nine years, first with Unilever and then with the IP law firm of Marval, O'Farrell & Mairal. He was selected to attend John Marshall on scholarship after winning a writing competition sponsored by the Inter-American Association for the Protection of Industrial Property (ASIPI), an association for intellectual property attorneys of Latin America. His essay, "Patents for the Development of Latin America," won him travel and living expenses while in Chicago.
A May 2006 graduate, Mercuriali started his new position with Motorola immediately after finals. He will be in training for most of the summer before returning to work from a Motorola regional office in Buenos Aires.
"The IP program here was excellent. I'm very happy with the courses and my professors, many of whom work with IP issues as attorneys every day. John Marshall being in an international city makes a huge difference. I got to interact with lawyers from major firms and I got to attend a number of very important IP programs," Mercuriali said. "And Chicago is such a wonderful city for an international guest."

Associate Dean Dorothy Li, who has served as director of library services since 1992, retired from The John Marshall Law School on June 30.
Li, who received a law degree from National Taiwan University, emigrated to the United States and continued her education earning a degree in library science and an M.B.A. from Dominican University. She has taught and lectured at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
Li's passion for more than a decade has been exchanges between The John Marshall Law School and the People's Republic of China. She and then Dean Robert Gilbert Johnston made their first trip to China in 1993, and the first delegation from the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) of China arrived at John Marshall in 1994. Since then, more than half of the attorneys at SIPO have trained at The John Marshall Law School, and Li has arranged for various educational exchanges between the law school and its students with attorneys in China.
Li will continue her work with John Marshall's Asian Alliance Program.
Dorothy Li is delighted to welcome Chinese Consul Wen Zhencai of People's Republic of China; 18th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Moy; Chinese Consul General Xu Jinzhong and Consul Fan Xiaodong.
Extending warmest wishes to Dorothy Li as she retires from The John Marshall Law School are (from left) 18th Judicial Circuit Judge Kenneth Moy; John Marshall Acting Dean John Corkery; Richard Li, Dorothy's husband; People's Republic of China Consul General Xu Jinzhong, John Marshall Board of Trustees President Alfred Gallo and Chinese Consul Wen Zhencai.
