Eisenberg Mentorship Program Offers Insights into the World of Real Estate

The best opportunity to learn about the real estate profession is a mentorship, and the Eisenberg Foundation Mentoring Program may offer real estate law students the best hands-on look at the business, said Professor Celeste Hammond, director of the Center for Real Estate Law.

"This mentoring program is considered to be the mentoring program. It allows a student to shadow a real estate executive and experience the realities of the work world through the eyes and mind of a mentor," Hammond told students at a February "Careers in Real Estate" program.

Three enthusiastic representatives from the mentoring program, Peter Eisenberg (J.D./LL.M. '00), president of Lake Shore Development; Al Klairmont, president of Imperial Realty Co.; and Mark Yura of DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary, were guest speakers for the event, and each offered insights on why a pairing of student and professional is so important.

Eisenberg and Klairmont founded the Eisenberg Foundation Mentoring Program, named for Eisenberg's father, the late Harold E. Eisenberg, and Yura is a mentor. The working professionals who serve as Eisenberg mentors offer expertise in all facets of real estate, including current real estate trends, basic principles, lessons learned and financial strategies.

"I tell students that depending on how a mentor/mentee relationship is established _ one day, three days or a week—they'll get a varied look at what is involved in real estate development and marketing," Hammond said. "I encourage them to plan for several mentorships, if possible, so that they can reap the benefits of a number of people offering different perspectives."

Eisenberg didn't have the benefit of a mentorship program when he was at John Marshall. He is excited to be part of one now, because he knows the benefits such a program offers students. Although he has a law degree, Eisenberg isn't working just on the legal aspects of real estate. His company, Lake Shore Development, focuses on urban and downtown suburban development and redevelopment of retail and mixed-use projects.

Yura, an adjunct professor at John Marshall, said the mentorship program is a true shared experience. He arranges his schedule to best accommodate the student, so that phone calls and meetings on projects are part of the mentorship. After the mentorship, Yura is happy to stay in contact with the mentee, just as he does with former students from his real estate classes.

If you mentor with Klairmont, he plans a full day's activities, including a 7:30 a.m. start to visit properties. His day is filled with site visits, tenant meetings and maintenance discussions and he is happy to share background and insights for each stop of the day. He takes the mentee to lunch for a one-on-one discussion of the business and answers all questions from the student, as well as providing insights on how to begin a career in real estate.

"Take a closer look at the Eisenberg Foundation Mentor Program roster," Hammond urged students. "The list of mentors shows experts in their fields and all have the enthusiasm and passion for the business which they exude to the benefit of any interested real estate students."

Details on the program are at www.eisenbergfoundation.org.
