The Corporate Law Association of The John Marshall Law School will present its Francis D. Morrissey Lifetime Achievement Award to U.S. District Court Judge Joan Lefkow, and its Career Achievement Award to Christopher Abbinante of Fidelity National Title Group, Inc., at the Second Annual Corporate Ethics Awards reception on Wednesday, April 5.
Judge Lefkow has been a member of the bench since 1990 when she first served as an executive magistrate judge. From 1997 to 1982, she was an U.S. magistrate judge, and then moved to the Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District. In 2000, Lefkow took a seat on the circuit bench.
Her career also includes time as a legal instructor at the University of Miami Law School, as executive director of the Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation where she had previously worked as an attorney, and serving on the Illinois Fair Employment Practices Commission, including a term as chief judge. She clerked for Judge Thomas E. Fairchild of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Lefkow's 2004 article "What Persuades When the Judge Has Discretion?" was selected one of the 10 best articles published by the American Bas Association by its GP Solo magazine. She has served as co-chair for the Chicago Bar Association's Alliance for Women Committee; as an Advisory Committee member for the Center for International Human Rights at Northwestern University Law School; a member of the Northwestern University Law School Dean's Advisory Committee on Community and Diversity.
She also has served on the Rules Committee of both the District and Bankruptcy Courts, and in 1990 and 1996, she was awarded the Judiciary Award by the Women's Bar Association of Illinois.
Abbinante is president of the Eastern Operations for Fidelity National Title Group, Inc., the largest title insurance company in the United States. Before being appointed to his current position in 2005, Abbinante served as chief operating officer, executive vice president and Division Four manager of the title operations for Fidelity National Financial, Inc. Abbinante also served on the Transition Committee that helped facilitate the acquisition of Chicago Title by Fidelity National Financial, Inc.
Abbinante began his career with Chicago Title Insurance Company in 1976 as an attorney trainee. From 1984 to 1985, he was Chicago Metro Sales and Marketing manager. From 1986 to 1990, he was manager of Cook County Operations. From 1991 to 1993, he was senior vice president and Eastern Division manager for Chicago Title and general counsel for the Central Division.
Abbinante received a bachelor's degree in history from Loyola University in 1972 and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago in 1985. He graduated from John Marshall in 1976 with a J.D. degree, and received an LL.M. in tax law from the law school in 1983.

The John Marshall Law School's Gay and Lesbian Legal Alliance (GALLA) will present a Judicial Leadership Award to Cook County Circuit Court Judge Tomas R. Chiola, the first openly gay man elected to any state, county or municipal office in Illinois, during a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, in room 3-East of the law school, 315 S. Plymouth Ct. in Chicago.
Co-sponsored by the Chicago Bar Association's Committee on the Legal Rights of Lesbians and Gay Men, the Illinois State Bar Association Special Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, the Lesbian and Gay Bar Association of Chicago, and the National Gay and Lesbian Law Association, the event will also recognize all of the gay and lesbian judges who have since followed, including the two latest additions to the bench, Mary Roberts and Michael McHale.

During the 2006 Spring Meeting of the American Bar Association Law Student Division (ABA/LSD), second-year-student Jessica Smith was named the 2006-2007 governor for the 7th Circuit. In that capacity, she will represent ABA-member law students from Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin to the ABA, and will be a voting member of the ABA/LSD Board of Governors.
Smith is currently the student representative to the ABA for the Student Bar Association Executive Board for 2005-2006. In addition to her ABA responsibilities, Smith is also a member of the Employee Benefits Student Law Association, a John Marshall class representative for PMBR and BARBRI, a member of the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity and an executive board member of the Corporate Law Association
After graduating from Lake Forest College, and before enrolling at John Marshall, Smith was an account executive with First Insurance Funding Corporation. Since starting law school, she has completed an internship with the Federal Defender Program, and is currently a legal intern with First Insurance Funding Corporation.

He was interviewed by ABC-TV Chicago on the issue of jury make-up and substitute jurors after it was discovered that two jurors would be replaced from the jury at the trial of former Gov. George Ryan.

He is a guest speaker at the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools' Higher Learning Commission (HLC) 2006 Annual Meeting April 1 through 4 in Chicago, outlining the process The John Marshall Law School developed and employed in preparing for, drafting and completing the HLC Self-Study Report.

Professor Doris Estelle Long
Activities
She was a respondent to Professor Paul Finkelman's presentation on "Chief Justice John Marshall's Court and the Problem of Race: Slaves, Free Blacks, and American Indians," as part of the Belle R. and Joseph H. Braun Memorial Distinguished Lecture on March 23. She discussed the impact of the Marshall Trilogy on the protection of Native American culture.
She will be a presenter on April 3 at the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools' Higher Learning Commission 2006 Annual Meeting in Chicago discussing topics related to the extent of institutional ownership of academic intellectual property.
Timothy P. O'Neill
Activities
On March 8, Professor O'Neill presented the film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance as part of Professor Cynthia Bond's "Law Through the Lens' series. His commentary was based on his law review article on the films of John Ford.
On March 9, he moderated a panel for the Criminal Justice Society. It included lawyers and judges discussing careers in criminal law.
On March 25, he addressed the National Conference of Law Reviews on his work in the area of confessions.
On March 27, he was a panelist discussing a film on the life of Judge Thelton Henderson.
On April 7-9, he will be coaching the Gibbon's Criminal Procedure moot court team at the competition at Seton Hall Law School in Newark, New Jersey.
On April 28, he will address a faculty workshop at Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.
Professor Ronald Smith
Activities
He was interviewed by NBC-TV Channel 5 and WGN-TV Channel 9, as well as the Daily Herald, on issues surrounding the jury at the former Gov. George Ryan corruption trial after it was discovered that two jurors lied on their jury affidavits.

The Public Interest Law Council is sponsoring a 5K Run & Walk to assist in the loan repayment program. You will be able to sign up for this race all week in the Sargis-Miner lounge.
Delta Theta Phi will meet at noon and 5 p.m. in room 403. Elections will be held.

The Middle Eastern Law Student Association will meet at noon in room 300. This meeting will feature Ilai Alon, professor of Political Sociology at Tel Aviv University and visiting professor at the University of Chicago. He will present "Democracy in the Middle East: The Election of Hamas."
The Student Bar Association will present a program about student loan consolidation by "Graduate Leverage" at noon and 5:15 p.m. in room 200.

Warren Lupel of the Board of Trustees will present "The Practical Aspects of Professional Ethics" at 5 p.m. in room 200. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
