The Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution, along with the Trial Advocacy and Dispute Resolution Honors Board, has established an office space in room 411.
"Our new office space has already helped us to achieve our program's goals," stated Christy Brewer, the honors board's presiding barrister. "It's a place where we can share our resources, operate our programs and hold our meetings," she added.
At any given time, the office is staffed by council and board members who work on competition planning and assist students who come in for information. Currently, the council and board are busy planning for the 1L Mock Trial Competition, which will be held on March 24. Area attorneys and judges are being recruited to serve as evaluators, judges and coaches for the 32 teams of four students each that are participating in this year's competition.
Of the new facilities, Professor Kenneth Kandaras, director of the center, said, "I am especially pleased that the administration has provided the center and student board with such appropriate surroundings. It has already had a very positive affect toward meeting our current and future goals."
Brewer added, "It's also a place where council and board members can work together and get to know each other better. This will help us to grow and strengthen our honors program."
The Trial Advocacy and Dispute Resolution Honors Board was established in fall 2004. Students in the top third of their class after the first year are invited to participate. With more than 50 council members, the program is currently the largest honors program operating at the law school. As council members, students administer programs ranging from collegiate-level mediation competitions to hosting interscholastic trial advocacy and alternative dispute resolution competitions.
