Comparative Trial Advocacy in Ireland

In this course, we approach trial advocacy and litigation in a transnational context, particular to Ireland and the United States. We examine the American and Irish systems by conducting simulated trial advocacy exercises using fact patterns and rules of evidence from both systems, placing particular emphasis on the legal, ethical, and cultural challenges facing an American advocate in transnational litigation.

The overseas component of the course, which will takes place January, involves a series of lectures by leading members of the bench, bar and Irish government, mock trial exercises at the historic King's Inns and first-hand observation of Irish courts in session. An in-school class component takse place prior overseas.

Prerequisites for the course are Basic Trial Advocacy and Evidence.

An informational session is held in early fall for all prospective attendees. Because class size is restricted, students who have an interest in the program are strongly encouraged to attend the informational meeting or contact the program coordinator. Topics covered at the informational meeting include:

• Course overview/curriculum

• Registration requirements

• Selection criteria (in the event the number of interested students exceeds availability)

• Financial aid

• Travel arrangements

• Q&A

If you have an interest in participating in this program, please contact Lance Northcutt, Assistant Director of Trial Advocacy at 9northcutt@jmls.edu.
