Gerald Berendt received his Master of Laws degree in Labor Law from New York University School of Law, where he was awarded the Elias Lieberman Memorial Fellowship. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was an editor of the Law Review.
After law school, Professor Berendt was an attorney with the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, DC. Since 1977, he has held a number of Governor's appointments to Illinois agencies, including Chairman of the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board, Chairman and Executive Director of the Illinois Office of Collective Bargaining, Director of Labor Ad Hoc, and member of the Illinois Impasse Resolution Panel. In 2002-2003, he served as a member of the Governor's Labor Policy Committee.
He is active in a number of labor relations organizations, including serving as a director of the Chicago Chapter of the Labor and Employment Relations Association. He is a labor relations neutral and provides arbitration and mediation services to employers and unions, frequently on a pro bono basis.
He has authored or co-authored numerous books and law review articles and frequently speaks before professional associations and bar groups. He is co-author of Contract Law and Practice, Rev. 2d Ed. (LexisNexis 2009). His most recent article, Arthur Goldberg: The John Marshall Law School and Secretary of Labor in the Kennedy Administration, will appear in 29 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. Law ____ (2013).
At the request of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, Professor Berendt has served as an academic amicus curiae before that court. Professor Berendt has chaired the law school's Dean Fred F. Herzog Memorial Lecture and periodic Arthur J. Goldberg Conferences, named for the late Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, who was a distinguished member of the John Marshall faculty.
Professor Berendt joined the faculty in 1975. He teaches Collective Bargaining and Arbitration, Contracts, Labor Law, and Public Sector Labor Relations.
