After graduating from law school, Patricia Mell was an assistant attorney general forthe Ohio Attorney General’s Office. In 1983, she served as the corporation counsel for the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office. She began teaching in 1984, as a visiting assistant clinical professor at Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio, and the following year was a visiting assistant professor at the University of Toledo College of Law. From 1986 to 1991, Dean Mell taught at Widener University School of Law in Delaware. She moved to Michigan in 1991, joining the Detroit firm of Lewis White and Clay and becoming an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School. She began her career at Detroit College of Law in 1992, was promoted to full professor in 1996, and served as associate dean for academic affairs from 1998 to 2001. In 2002, she was a visiting professor at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, teaching criminal law and a white-collar crime seminar. Her areas of expertise are criminal law, the legal aspects of e-commerce, corporations, agency, and partnership. She also has an interest in computers and privacy, and her article on national security under the USA Patriot Act appeared recently in the Denver Law Review. She was named dean and joined the John Marshall faculty in 2003.
