After graduating from law school, where she was an editor of the DePaul Law Review, Maureen Collins was an attorney with Sidley & Austin in Chicago (1985­-1990). Her practice focused on trademark, copyright, and advertising law. Subsequently, she joined the faculty at DePaul University College of Law as a legal writing instructor and became director of legal writing in 1993.

Professor Collins was at DePaul for 15 years and came to John Marshall as a visiting professor in 2005. For more than 10 years, she has spent her summers as a research and writing consultant at Sidley Austin Brown & Wood, working with 1,000 summer associates. Professor Collins wrote a monthly column, "Legal Communications," for the Illinois Bar Journal from 1995-2004. She teaches Lawyering Skills.
