Before enrolling in law school, Professor Mahmud taught political science and international relations at various universities in Pakistan and the United States. At Hastings, he was an editor of the Hastings International and Comparative Law Review. Before joining the faculty of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1989, he practiced complex litigation with the San Francisco-based firm Pettit & Martin. He was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School in 1997-1998, and a Visiting Professor at Seattle University School of Law in 2003-2004. Professor Mahmud serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals, is a member of the Board of Governors and Co-President-elect of the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT), and a member of the Board of Directors of Latina/o Critical Legal Studies (LatCrit). He has published extensively in the areas of comparative constitutional law, human rights, legal history, and legal theory. Professor Mahmud joined the John Marshall faculty in Fall 2004. His teaching areas are Comparative Law, Contracts, International Law, Legal History, and Philosophy of Law.
