Description: Sponsored by The Chicago Bar Associations Young Lawyers Section, the workshop will provide law students with an opportunity to "practice" interview with attorneys, learn strategies to handle difficult and inappropriate interview questions, and to meet attorneys from different areas of practice, including law firm, corporate, and government settings.  The workshop will begin with a brief informational introduction, followed by one-on-one mock interviews with attorneys.  A complimentary networking reception will immediately follow the Workshop. 

The Law Student Interview Workshop is free to CBA members.  The fee for non-members is $12 which includes a one-year membership to the CBA.

HEADHUNTER KATE PATTERSON SPEAKS TO IP STUDENTS

Description: Meet legal recruiter Kate Patterson who will share with y ou -- novel, useful & non-obvious ways to find a job in the intellectual property field.  Kate Patterson has specialized in recruiting and consulting services exclusively for intellectual property attorneys since 1980.  Beyond basic staffing issues, she shares her considerable experience with venture capital firms and investors advising them on how best to meet their IP needs.  She has structured IP functions in numerous startup companies, working with corporations from their inception to the Fortune 100.  As IP law has grown and evolved, Kate has counseled major international law firms expanding their IP capabilities and worked closely with patent and trademark firms on their changing HR and staffing needs.  Although recruiting is a primary concern of her company, Kate is more than a "headhunter".  She strategizes with clients to develop creative solutions to their current and future concerns.  Her firm has built practice groups from conception and, as they grown and mature, solves continuing concerns about compensation, hiring, benefit and workload analysis.  Pizza Lunch Included!

LUNCH W/ FBI SPECIAL AGENT & JMLS ALUM, FRANK BOCHTI

Description: Frank graduated from John Marshall in 1985 and was accepted into the Federal Bureau of Investigations in 1987.  He was assigned to the LA Field Office where he investigated Domestic Terrorism matters and eventually became the coordinator of the FBI's newly created Safe Streets Task Force in the wake of the 1992 Los Angeles riots.  Frank remained in the Violent Crimes/Major Offender Program for the remainder of his tour in LA and primarily investigated street gangs in South Central LS.   In 1997, Frank was transferred to the Chicago Field Office where he currently has oversight responsibility for its undercover program.  He also is the coordinator of the name-check program and is one of the press spokesmen of the office.  Hear more in depth about Frank's career path and what the FBI looks for when they hire.  Lunch Provided!

A second session of this program has been added since the one on the 8th was so popular!  Professors Art Acevedo and Jason Kilborn, along with the Director of Academic Services, Jodie Needham, will be talking with students interested in transactional & business law.  Specifically, they will cover how to plan your courses wisely for the business "track".  Students interested in any area of transactional law (corporate, tax, bankruptcy, securities, commercial, etc.) are invited to this program to hear topics addressed such as:

  • What classes are offered in business law?
  • Are there "gateway" classes that should be taken first?
  • Do I need to take federal taxation?  Are other tax classes needed?  Do I need to take Fed Tax first?
  • What is bankruptcy law and do I need it if I hope to practice corporate law?
  • Will any corporate classes help me with the bar exam?
  • What is the difference between Secured Transactions and Securities Regulation?
  • Which classes will employers expect me to have completed?
  • Which classes are offered when?  Are the electives I want in business law offered every year?
