Scholarships

Dale W. Phillips Scholarship

Each academic year, the Center director awards a substantial scholarship from the Dale W. Phillips Scholarship Fund. The student recipient(s) is chosen based on high academic achievement as a graduate tax law or employee benefits degree candidate, and for continued contributions in enhancing the reputation of the law school and of the Center for Tax Law and Employee Benefits. The award is granted in the spring semester, and public recognition is made at a major Center event being hosted that spring.

Mr. Phillips is an alum of the LLM in Tax Law program.

Students interested in the scholarship should submit their cover letter, resume, a writing sample, and an essay highlighting their contributions to the law school or Center to Dean Kennedy by February 1. There is no formal application.

IRS Externship Scholarship

Each summer, a graduate employee benefits degree candidate, or a graduate tax law degree candidate pursuing a concentration in employee benefits, is selected by the Center director to extern in the IRS's Employee Plans' Office of Rulings and Agreement within the Tax Exempt/Government Entities Division. That student will receive $5,000 in scholarship awards from the IRS Externship Scholarship to cover some of the travel, lodging, and living expenses as the student travels to Arlington, Virginia, for the summer. Public recognition is made at a major Center event being hosted that spring, usually the annual John Marshall Employee Benefits Symposium.

Degree candidates interested in the externship and associated scholarship should submit their cover letter, resume, a writing sample, and an essay highlighting their contributions to the law school or Center to Prof. Kennedy by February 1. There is no formal application.

Sweetnam Scholarship

Each summer, a graduate Employee Benefits student, or a graduate Tax law student pursuing a concentration in Employee Benefits, is selected by the Center Director to extern in the Office of Benefits Tax Counsel at the U.S. Department of Treasury Office of Tax Policy. That student will receive $5,000 in scholarship awards from the William F. Sweetnam, Jr. Scholarship Fund to cover some of the travel, lodging and living expenses as the student travels to Washington DC for the summer. Public recognition is made at a major Center event being hosted that spring, usually the annual John Marshall Employee Benefits Symposium.

Mr. Sweetnam was the Benefits Tax Counsel and created this externship, and decided to personally fund the travel expenses after he left that position. Mr. Sweetnam currently serves on the Employee Benefits program Advisory Board.

Chicago Bar Association Federal Taxation Committee Honorarium

Each year, the Chicago Bar Association's Federal Tax Committee makes an award to a graduating JD student who has the highest GPA in his/her JD tax courses.

Chicago Bar Association Employee Benefits Committee Honorarium

Each May, the Chicago Bar Association Employee Benefits Committee honors the student at the John Marshall Law School that has the highest GPA in the graduate Employee Benefits program. The director of the Center will determine the student with the highest GPA, and if there is a tie, will select the student who, in her opinion, has made the most substantial contribution to the Center or the school. No application is required.
