MS Degree in Tax Law: Requirements

MS Program Overview

MS Program Curriculum

Educating Tax Professionals through the MS Program in Tax Law

For decades, the Graduate (LLM) Program in Tax Law at The John Marshall Law School has been educating attorneys in the substance and practice of all major areas of tax law.  Within the past decade, the Center also began offering specialization tracks – additional intensified and in-depth training in the areas of Corporate Taxation, Estate & Personal Financial Planning, Taxation of Closely Held Businesses, and Employee Benefits.

Beginning in the Fall of 2005, accountants, personal financial advisors, and financial and estate planners can take advantage of this graduate program through a Masters of Science (MS) degree.  The Center for Tax Law and Employee Benefits will offer a dynamic collaborative learning environment where business professionals and attorneys can learn the legal aspects of tax law.

The John Marshall Law School is in the Top Ten schools nationally in providing graduate level legal education.  Students come from the Midwest, as well as other parts of the U.S. The LLM Graduates are practicing tax law in law firms, governmental agencies or as in-house counsel. The MS graduates are expected to be working in accounting firms, consulting firms, governmental agencies, or with in-house staff, as tax planners, advisors and senior level executives.

Students in the program:

Appreciate and experience the collaborative relationship process used between attorneys and clients to solve complex tax issues

Gain the ability to identify and solve complex tax issues, as well as the ability to apply the law creatively to meet client’s goals

Attend classes during late afternoons, evenings and Saturdays

Benefit from the Center programs that enhance the academic experience with Public Policy Forums, Careers in Tax Law events, and Tax Law Student Associations

Take classes with the experienced tax practitioners who are engaged in cutting-edge aspects of their specified fields of tax law expertise

MS Candidates may earn the degree in 2 to 3 years

Course and Curriculum:

The Curriculum, developed with input from an Advisory board of practicing attorneys and respected professionals in the industry, provides a practical grounding in all major areas of taxation, with in-depth specialization in certain areas of tax law.

Courses are taught on an accelerated basis over the summer or over a 14-week period during the fall and spring semesters.

Course materials include the forms and materials tax attorneys actually use.

The method of instruction is principally problem-based and transactional in nature.

Program Requirements:

To earn an MS degree in Tax Law, students must complete a total of 24 credit hours, from required and elective courses.
