Tax Externships

CENTER DIRECTOR APPROVAL
IS REQUIRED FOR ALL
EXTERNSHIPS & PRACTICUM

INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE OFFICE OF CHIEF COUNSEL (TX 395)

When: any semester

Where: Chicago office

Credits available: 3 – 4

Prerequisites: TX 340/341 - Advanced Federal Income Tax/Federal Income of Property Transactions; TX 333 - Tax & Employee Benefits Research; Must have completed 10 hours in the LLM program before applying; PLUS: Center Director Approval required.

Eligible students: students enrolled in the LLM or joint JD/LLM Tax Law programs

Students selected to participate in this program will work with attorneys at the Office of Chief Counsel of the IRS' Small Business/Self Employed Division Counsel, Large and Mid-Size Business Division Counsel or Tax Exempt/Government Entities Counsel. The educational objectives of the course include practical experience in tax law, development of research, writing, and drafting skills, and preparations of pleading, discovery documents, stipulation of fact, and trial memoranda used in Tax Court cases.

ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE (IDOR) (TX 395)

When: any semester

Where: Chicago office

Credits available: 3-4

Prerequisites: TX 340/341 - Advanced Federal Income Tax/Federal Income of Property Transactions; TX 333 - Tax & Employee Benefits Research; TX 392 - Civil & Criminal Tax Procedures; Must have completed 10 hours in the LLM program before applying; PLUS: Center Director Approval required.


Eligible students: students enrolled in the LLM or joint JD/LLM Tax Law programs

Students selected to participate in this program will work with attorneys at the Illinois Department of Revenue. The primary responsibility of IDOR is to serve as the tax collection agency for state government and for local governments. The educational objectives are to provide externs with practical experience in a specialized area of tax law by becoming familiar with the Illinois Department of Revenue; to further develop practical lawyering skills to include research, writing, document review and application of law and policy.

TAX LAW PRACTICUM (TX 395)

When: any semester

Where: Chicago

Credits available: 3 – 4

Prerequisites: TX 340/341 - Advanced Federal Income Tax/Federal Income of Property Transactions; TX 333 - Tax & Employee Benefits Research; TX 392 - Civil & Criminal Tax Procedures; One of 3 Corporate Tax Courses (TX 350 or TX 351 - Corporate Taxation I or II or TX 353 - Corporate Taxation: A Survey; TX 370 - Gift & Estate Tax Law;  Must have completed 10 hours in the LLM program before applying; PLUS: Center Director Approval required.

Eligible students: students enrolled in the LLM or joint JD/LLM Tax Law programs

The Tax Law Practicum was added to the curriculum to provide students with a hands-on experience in tax law practice. Under careful supervision, the student will work with a member of the adjunct faculty in one of the various settings where tax law lawyers practice: law firms, consulting firms, accounting firms, consulting firms,corporations, or government. The course is intended to meet the needs of the individual student who has not yet had significant practice experience in the field of law.

 


EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION PRACTICUM (EB 390)

When: any semester

Where: Chicago

Credits available: 3-4

Prerequisites:  TX 340- Advanced Federal Income Tax; Tax & Employee Benefits Research; TX 392 and Survey of Executive Compensation EB 365

Eligible students: students enrolled in the LLM or joint JD/LLM Tax Law programs with a concentration on Employee Benefits

The Executive CompensationPracticum was added to the curriculum to provide students with a hands-on experience in employee benefits practice. Under careful supervision, the student will work with a member of the adjunct faculty in one of the various settings where employee benefits practice: law firms, consulting firms, corporations, or government. The course is intended to meet the needs of the individual student who has not yet had significant practice experience in the field of employee benefits law.
