The educational objectives of the course include practical experience in employee benefits law, development of research, writing, and drafting skills, and preparations of pleading, discovery documents, stipulations of fact, and trial memoranda used in Tax Court cases.

The educational objectives of this course include practical experience in employee benefits law, development of research, writing and drafting skill, and preparation of memoranda, discovery documents, and guidelines to assist pension investigators and auditors.

Students selected to participate in this program will work in the Department of Treasury's Office of Tax Policy over the summer months in Washington, DC. The students will assigned to an office of Benefits Counsel supervising attorney, who is responsible for the extern's orientation; introduction to attorneys, accountants and actuaries in that office; assignment of work;; and final evaluation of performance. The education objectives of this externship are to provide students with practical experience in a specialized area of employee benefits law by becoming thoroughly familiar with the legal and policy implications of the Office of Benefits Counsel within the Department of Treasury.

PENSION RIGHTS CENTER (EB 390)

Students selected to participate in this program will work closely with Pension Rights Center attorneys and personnel. The Pension Rights Center is the country's only consumer organization dedicated solely to protecting and promoting the rights of American workers, retirees, and their families. It works in conjunction with the Pension Information and Counseling Project that has projects in Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin. The educational objectives of this externship include practical experience in developing research, writing, and drafting skills; to learn practical lawyering skills of document review; and to be involved in consumer outreach efforts.

Students selected to participate inn this program work with the PBGC attorneys, accountants, and actuaries over the summer months in Washington, DC. The PBGC is a federal corporation created by the Employee Retirement Income Security act of 1974. It insures private single-employer and multi-employer defined benefit plans. the educational objections of this externship include practical experience in defined benefit plans and their terminations; to further develop research, writing, and drafting skills; and to learn practical lawyering skills of document review and application of law and policy.

The PSCA is a national, non-for-profit association that offers assistance to its members regarding the administration, investment, compliance, and communication of profit sharing and 401(k) plans. The educational objectives of this externship include practical experience in profit sharing and 401(k) plans; development of research, writing, and drafting skills, and preparation of memoranda and communication pieces to assist PSCA members.

NEPAP is a regional, non-for-profit organization to provide assistance to individuals having trouble understanding of obtaining their pension benefits.The educational objectives include practical experience in a specialized area of employee benefits law by becoming familiar with the pension assistance activities of the New England Pension Assistance initiative; to further develop practical lawyering skills to provide research, writing, document review and application of law and policy.

The educational objectives of the course include practical experience in employee benefits law and development of research, writing, and drafting skills. They also include familiarizing the student with the editing aspects involved in the publication of a textbook on employee benefits law.

Students selected to participate in this program work with the attorneys and staff of the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (better known as ASPPA), which is a not-for-profit professional society that serves as educator, voice and advocate for employer-based retirement plans. The educational objectives of the course include practical experience in employee benefits law and development of research, writing, and drafting skills. They also include a better understanding of the legislative and regulatory processes that govern employee benefit plans.

The Employee Benefits Practicum was added to the curriculum to provide students with a hands-on experience in employee benefits practice. Under careful supervision, the student will work with a member of the adjunct faculty in one of the various settings where employee benefits practice: law firms, consulting firms, corporations, or government. The course is intended to meet the needs of the individual student who has not yet had significant practice experience in the field of employee benefits law.
