WRITING COMPETITION FOR LAW STUDENTS

Listed below are several student writing competitions specifically focussed on tax law or employee benefits.  As a law student, please feel free to click here for information on other competitions, or discuss it with the JMLS Associate Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs, Bill Powers.

Paul Faherty Tax Law Writing Scholarship

James Lynch, a partner at Winston & Strawn and a member of the Advisory Board for the graduate Tax law programs, has graciously provided an annual writing competition to honor Paul faherty, a past Director of the Center for Tax law and Employee Benefits.  In the fall, 2007, a problem will be available on this website focusing on a timely tax issue.  At that point, all interested law students will have until April 1st to provide a written submission (25 to 30 pages in length, not including endnotes).  Three winners will be announced: $5,000 for the first place winner; $1,000 for two honorable mentions.  For information and rules, click here

Tannenwald Foundation for Excellence in Tax
Annual Writing Competition

Any law student pursuing any law degree (J.D., LL.M. or S.J.D.) can submit a scholarly article on any tax-related topic.  Each paper must be sponsored by a faculty member, and no more than 5 students from any law school may submit articles.  The deadline will be in late June 2008.  Prizes are currently $3000 for first place, $2000 for second place and $1000 for third place.  In addition, the first place article will likely be published in the American bar Association Section of Taxation journal The Tax Lawyer.  Click here for information.

Please see Prof. Kennedy if interested.  Based on the length requirements in the rules (25 to 50 pages), Prof. Kennedy can probably arrange an appropriate number of credits towards Independent Research.  This article can be written in conjunction with any written assignments for classes.

The American College of Employee Benefits Counsel
Annual Writing Competition

Any law student pursuing any law degree (J.D., LL.M. or S.J.D.) can submit a scholarly article on any employee benefits-related topic.  The deadline will be in late June 2008.  Prizes are currently $1500 for first place and $1500 for second place.  In addition, the first place article will likely be published in the BNA Pension and Benefits Reporter or the BNA Tax Management Compensation Planning Journal.  Click here for information.

The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys

Any law student pursuing any law degree (J.D., LL.M. or S.J.D.) can submit a scholarly article on elder law-related issues that relate to diversity in senior housing, access to health care or capacity and guardianship.  The deadline for papers is 12:00 PM on May 1, 2008.  Prizes are currently $1500 for first place, $1000 for second place and $500 for third place.  In addition, the first place winner will be honored at the Fall NAELA Symposium in Kansas City, MO and will recieve up to $1000.00 for travel and meeting-related expenses.  The top eight articles will be published in the NAELA Student Journal.  Click here for the rules. Please see Prof. Kennedy if interested.  Based on the length requirements in the rules (25 to 50 pages), Prof. Kennedy can probably arrange an appropriate number of credits towards Independent Research if the topic has a substantial nexus to federal income taxes or employee benefits.  This article can be written in conjunction with any written assignments for classes.
