The Center for Tax Law and Employee Benefits
GENERAL INFORMATION for
Graduate EMPLOYEE BENEFITS students

Academic Rules

A student is not permitted to have more than 3 absences in the course of a semester (assuming the course meets once a week). The instructor has the right to adjust grades for class participation. A student is entitled to an exam conference. We find it helpful in the Center for Tax Law & Employee Benefits to use the “buddy system.” If you cannot attend class, have a buddy pick up handouts, etc.

Contact Information

It is your responsibility to give your name, home address and phone number to Kathy Winiczay so we are able to keep in touch with you.

Email Accounts

PLEASE NOTE:  all future e-mail correspondence from the Center will ONLY go to a student’s John Marshall account, including last minute messages about class cancellations.  It is up to each student to follow the instructions below if they want to have all incoming email messages be forwarded to another preferred email account.  The Center takes no responsibility for sending any correspondence to any email account other than to the student’s John Marshall account.  Please visit the school’s Computer Service Department for all questions http://www.jmls.edu/INTRANET/csd/Email.shtml#forward.

How do I forward my JMLS email to another email account:

** Please check with your ISP to see if it allows mail forwarding.  AOL currently does not allow email forwarding to AOL email accounts; your provider may also prohibit mail forwarding.

It is possible to forward your JMLS email to another email account if that is more convenient for you.  A copy of the original email is sent to the other account, while the original email is kept in your JMLS email box.  In order to forward you will  have to contact the JMLS CSD HELP DESK (helpdesk@jmls.edu) at ext. 550.  All email forwarding must now be done by an administrator.

If you do decide to forward your mail, please remember to periodically clean out your mailbox at school.  If your mailbox gets too full, it will not accept any new mail, at which point we may need to delete your mailbox.

Media Services

If you are unable to attend class, please contact Kathy Winiczay in advance. She will arrange with Media Services to have the class taped. Please note that some instructors do not allow their classes to be taped.

OTHER ITEMS

If a student desires an exam conference, you are permitted to contact the instructor and meet with him/her to go over your exam (either in person or by phone).

Anyone wishing to sign up for any externships, must send written reports (email preferable) every 2-3 weeks to let us know what types of project you are working on, etc.  Otherwise, you will not receive a grade for the externships.   Please send your emails to Kathy Winiczay (6winicza@jmls.edu.

RIA

Our representative for RIA is Robert Horsting.  His email address is Robert.Horsting@thomson.com.  Please contact Kathy Winiczay if you would like RIA access.  Robert will then forward you the link for registration.  You must be on site at JMLS using our computers for the registration process.
