REAL ESTATE LAW
The curriculum for the LL.M. in Real Estate Law Program recognizes that commercial real estate law has become increasingly complicated and that successful real estate attorneys need to be prepared to handle the transactions generated when real estate is booming and when it is not.
The LL.M. curriculum, comprised of required and elective courses, enables attorneys to acquire the substantive knowledge and to develop the skills needed to handle a wide variety of commercial real estate transactions. Our graduates have the depth of knowledge and the skills required to successfully practice in today.
Students may begin the program in the Fall or Spring semesters.
Classes meet in the evening and on Saturdays to provide students with blocks of time to do a Real Estate Legal Practicum, to work in the Fair Housing/ Affordable Housing Clinic or to hold other jobs. LL.M.
Courses are taught by full-time professors and by attorneys practicing with Chicago's leading law firms and corporations. Course materials include the forms and documents real estate attorneys actually use to document and close transactions. No thesis is required to complete the LL.M. Program, but students are encouraged to undertake an Independent Research Project and write a publishable article.
Students and Alumni
The LL.M. Program graduated its first students in June of 1996. Students come from across the country to Chicago to learn in a city that truly is a real estate town.
Some students begin the program immediately after completing their JD degrees. Others enter after several years in practice seeking to refocus their careers. These attorneys often earn their LL.M. degree in two semesters.
Attorneys in practice, who want to expand their skill set and better serve their clients, complete the program requirements while continuing to practice. They generally earn their LL.M. in two to three years.
Alumni are practicing commercial real estate law or working in the real estate industry throughout the world in a variety of settings including law firms, corporations and governmental agencies. Many have found their current positions through leads from other students and from alumni.
The Program emphasizes the business as well as the legal aspects of commercial real estate practice since the best commercial real estate attorneys understand their clients' business concerns and objectives.
Students have opportunities to gain an understanding of the business objectives, which underlie all real estate transactions, through participation in the Site Visit Program and attending programs organized by the Center for Real Estate Law and the Student Chapter of Lambda International which bring real estate industry leaders to the school.
LL.M. Students with no real estate or other practice experience may elect to take a Real Estate Legal Practicum (an externship) during their final semester.
