Academic Rules for Advanced Degree Students (LLM & MS)

For John Marshall Law students with an interest in Real Estate Law, it is difficult to cover more than the  fundamentals of a practice area within the time limits of a JD program. John Marshall JD students who would like to further develop knowledge and transactional skills in Real Estate law find the Joint JD/LLM Program increasingly important as a career development tool.

Once admitted, Joint Program students receive individualized academic counseling. Each semester Joint Program students are required to meet with the Director or the Associate Director prior to registering to discuss the upcoming semester's schedule and be approved to take LLM Level Courses. This academic advising directs student progress in the Program.  Real Estate Transactions and Federal Income Tax are generally the prerequisites for taking LLM Level Courses.

The Joint Program enables students to count up to 10 hours of LLM Level Real Estate Law courses toward both their JD degree and their LLM degree in Real Estate Law.  This is a significant cost savings available only to John Marshall JD students who are admitted to the  Joint Program. JD Students may apply to the Joint Program after completing 29 hours. Most Joint Program students can complete the requirements for both programs with 104 credit hours (80 JD and 24 additional LLM) by completing a semester of LLM courses after they graduate.  For more information about the LLM degree requirements and courses, click here.

Required JD  Courses: these courses are prerequisite for many LLM level courses.
