Financial Aid

Students who need help financing their graduate education at The John Marshall Law School may be eligible for student loans. Graduate students must be enrolled for at least three credit hours per semester in order to be eligible to borrow annually through the Federal Stafford Loan Program. It may also be possible to apply for private educational loans for additional funding. International students are not eligible for federal student loans, but some private education loan programs may be able to assist them.

Students are eligible to apply for financial aid after acceptance to the LLM, MS or JD/LLM Program. For more information, please contact the Financial Aid Office.

Need Analysis.  Before one can be considered for federally guaranteed loans, one must go through need analysis. This process helps determine one's financial need, and therefore, the amount one qualifies for in a Federal Stafford Loan. This need is determined by using information provided on the forms required by the financial aid office.

Federal Stafford Loan (Subsidized and Unsubsidized):

The Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan is a federally guaranteed, need based loan. One may borrow up to $8,500 per academic year depending on one's eligibility, and the interest is paid by the federal government as long as the borrower remains enrolled at least half-time (at least three credit hours per semester).

The Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, a guaranteed loan that is available to most students, provides a maximum of $20,500 per year in combination with the Subsidized Stafford Loan. The interest on the unsubsidized loan accrues immediately upon disbursement of the funds.

The total annual maximum amount one may borrow for the Federal Stafford Loan (subsidized and unsubsidized combined) is $20,500.

Required Financial Aid Forms:

The following forms are used in our financial aid process. They are listed in the order used and are explained briefly.

  1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is the need analysis instrument required by the U.S. Department of Education for all students requesting Federal Stafford Loans. Mail the completed form to Federal Student Aid Programs, P.O. Box 7001, Mt. Vernon, IL, 62864-0071. If you prefer, you may file your FAFSA online.
  2. Student Aid Report (SAR). You will receive a confirmation of the SAR after your FAFSA has been processed. Please review this report. If it does not list John Marshall as one of your chosen schools because you exceed six schools, you should submit a copy of your SAR with a note asking our office to add our school to your list.
  3. The John Marshall Law School Financial Aid Application. This form must be completed by all students. This form is to be submitted to the Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Office will not begin reviewing your financial aid eligibility until we receive this form.
