The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois, through its Center for Intellectual Property Law, offers one of the most comprehensive intellectual property LLM programs in the country. By studying intellectual property law at John Marshall, you will not only be able to learn about substantive and skills topics that are unaddressed by most IP LLM programs, you will study with some of the country’s top IP professors and practitioners in the midst of an extensive community of IP specialists in Chicago. The breadth of business and cultural activities centered in Chicago make it an intellectual environment with few equals. Both in the types of intellectual property issues encountered and in the caliber of practitioners, law firms, and corporate legal departments dealing with IP problems, Chicago is an extraordinary environment in which to study IP law.
The primary advantage to studying IP as an LLM student at John Marshall is the school’s exceptional breadth of course offerings. Every year, the LLM program includes specialized substantive courses in every area of IP law, as well as additional courses addressing the distinctive practice skills needed in IP practices. The IP program at John Marshall is particularly extensive and renowned in the area of patent law, but includes broad offerings in all areas of IP so as to provide complete training for other types of IP specialists as well. Cross-curriculum offerings with John Marshall’s Center for Information Technology and Privacy Law and Center for International Business and Trade Law allow students to take courses in the related fields of cybercrime, privacy and information technology and international business as part of their program of study.
Graduate students in the LL.M. program have the benefit of an experienced faculty in intellectual property law. The faculty is composed of five full-time professors and over 30 adjunct professors selected from the top scholars and practitioners in the field, including Chief Judge James F. Holderman of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The program also features visiting dignitaries, such as top scholars, practitioners and other experts who are invited to present guest lectures and master classes on new developments. Recent speakers include:
United States Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens
Chief Justice Paul R. Michel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit
