The Center for Intellectual Property Law at The John Marshall Law School oversees programs in four major areas. First, the Center manages one of the country’s leading intellectual property (IP) education programs, including extensive IP course offerings for Juris Doctor (JD), Masters (MS), and Masters of Law (LLM) students. Second, the Center offers numerous programs for practitioners on a wide range of IP topics. Third, the Center brings some of the country’s leading academics to The John Marshall Law School to share their cutting edge research with the law school and Chicago communities. Fourth, the Center furthers research into new IP issues through the work of its faculty. These four aspects of the Center’s activities are summarized here.
IP Education
The John Marshall Law School and its Center for Intellectual Property Law offer three types of IP education.
For JD students, the Center offers the JD Certificate in IP Law. To obtain the Certificate, a student must, within the course work required for the JD degree at the John Marshall Law School, complete sixteen (16) credit hours from the intellectual property courses offered by the Center. For more information on the courses required for the JD Certificate in IP law, please see the JD IP Curriculum Guide.
For students seeking training in IP law, but lacking any prior legal degree or training, the Center offers the Masters of Science Degree in Intellectual Property (IP MS). This degree program is appropriate for persons seeking to become patent agents, persons registered as patent agents in foreign legal systems who are seeking training in United States IP laws, and persons pursuing careers in IP licensing. For more information on the MS Degree Program, see the MS/LLM Degree Information Request.
For students who have a prior legal degree (from either a United States or foreign institution) or substantial prior legal training, the Master of Law Degree in Intellectual Property (IP LLM) Program offers a means to gain in-depth training in a variety of IP disciplines. Two tracks of courses are offered within the IP LLM programs. The Patent Track is presented to provide extensive training to persons with technical backgrounds who anticipate pursuing careers as patent specialists. The General IP Track includes courses in a broader variety of IP areas for persons wishing to obtain detailed and practical knowledge in the full range of IP domains. For more information on the Center’s IP LLM program, see the LLM Degree in Intellectual Property, and the LLM/MS Degree Information Request.
IP Service to the Practicing Bar
The Center for Intellectual Property Law at the John Marshall Law School is the sponsor and co-sponsor of numerous programs on IP topics offered to legal practitioners. These programs are offered throughout the year, typically presented by leaders of the IP bar from Chicago and throughout the country. For example, in 2007, the Honorable Howard T. Markey Distinguished Lecturers were Pamela Banner Krupka (Chair-Elect, Intellectual Property Law Section, American Bar Association and Principle, Krupka Law Group) and Robert G. Krupka, Partner & Co-Chair, Intellectual Property Group, Kirkland & Ellis).
The highlight of the Center’s offerings for practitioners is its annual IP Updates Conference offered each February. As an example of the topics and senior judges and practitioners involved in one of these programs, the 2007 Conference included the following:
