The John Marshall Law School Center for International Law offers excellent opportunities to students interested in studying international legal issues and in preparing for a career in the world's increasingly international business law climate. The Center offers a graduate law degree -- an LLM in International Business and Trade Law.
Courses It is axiomatic that a good international lawyer must first have a strong understanding of domestic law. Building upon John Marshall's rigorous program of training in all aspects of United States and Illinois law, students are free to choose from a large number of specialized courses in international law at the JD and LLM levels.
At the JD Level The John Marshall Law School offers approximately a dozen courses in international law to JD students as a regular part of the JD curriculum. These courses include Aviation Law, International Business Transactions, International Trade Law, Public International Law, Immigration Law, and International Intellectual Property Law. Students interested in international law are encouraged to take an active role in The John Marshall Law School International Law Society.
At the LLM Level Students will find a rich selection of international courses at the LLM level. In addition to the courses in the LLM Program in International Business and Trade Law, students will find international courses in the LL.M. Programs in Real Estate Law, Tax Law, Information Technology Law and Intellectual Property Law.
The LLM Program in International Business and Trade Law (IBT) is designed to train lawyers in the special issues and regulations of international economic law. This Program, the first of its kind in the Midwest, and one of only a handful in the United States, draws upon the rich resources of the international business, banking and legal communities in the Chicago metropolitan area. The 24-credit degree IBT LLM Program offers a selection of over 40 courses dealing with international business and trade law. IBT LLM students may elect to work towards a certificate of concentration in International Corporate and Finance Law or International Trade Law. The Program benefits from a strong adjunct faculty drawn from Chicago, New York City, Washington, DC, Australia and Europe. Class sizes range from 5-20 students providing a learning environment where students take an active role in their education.
In recent years, John Marshall has hosted students from Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China (Hong Kong), Columbia, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Korea, Lithuania, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Paraguay, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Yugoslavia. The international students in the IBT LLM Program, as well as those in the JD and other LLM Programs, add an important international dimension to the John Marshall community.
