It’s that time of year again! On Thursday, April 23rd and Friday, April 24th from 11am to12pm and 2 to 4pm the Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution in conjunction with the Trial Advocacy Honors Board will be interviewing potential council members for Board positions for the upcoming semester. The Trial Advocacy Honors Board is an excellent way to become involved in the Center and learn, first hand, about the opportunities offered in both litigation and alternative dispute resolution. Each interview will be approximately 15 minutes long and consist of a variety of topics, such as why each candidate wants to be on the Trial Advocacy and Dispute Resolution Honors Board and what position would be most suitable to you.
The following positions are available for the Fall 2009 semester: Barrister, Vice Barrister, Council Liaison, Events Coordinator, 1L Mock Trial Coordinator, Trial Team Manager, Alternative Dispute Resolution Team Manager, and Website Coordinator. We strongly encourage any council members who will have successfully completed one semester on the Trial Advocacy Council to interview!
Sign-ups for interviews will begin during the week of April 13th in Room 411.
Click here to download the 2009 Trial Advocacy Honors Board Application form. Fill it out, return it with a copy of your resume to Room 411. If you have any questions, feel free to stop by Room 411 or email us at trialad@jmls.edu.
DON'T FORGET - All council members are required to participate with the 1L Mock Trial Competition in some way, shape, or form.
Please stop by room 411 and sign-up to help with the 1L Mock Trial on March 27th
Office hours have begun – each council member is required to complete 9 hours by the end of the semester.
As a reminder each council member is also required to complete 7 activity hours by the end of the semester.
Activity hours opportunities include:

“Again, congratulations gentlemen. You both did such a fabulous job, In case you’re not aware, several onlookers told me that you almost made them cry during your closing argument deliveries. You also made a couple of the jurors actually cry during the award announcements because they were so proud and happy for you. Incredible.”
This glowing assessment of the closing arguments delivered by 3L Cheyne Adam and 2L David Lipschutz was received from one of the organizers of the Animal Law Advocacy Closing Argument competition at Harvard just last week. Cheyne and David were uniquely tied with each other for first place in this national competition. As the competition coordinator noted when presenting the John Marshall students each with a first place plaque, an unbreakable tie was unprecedented in the history of this prestigious competition.
Upon returning to Chicago following the competition, an area attorney who served as a juror and evaluator at Harvard contacted the law school wishing to hire either one of our winning team members as an intern in her Chicago-based law office. Cheyne Adam accepted, and is now gainfully employed, in addition to preparing for graduation and the bar. David Lipschutz was already employed, coincidentally, at the firm where last year’s Animal Law Advocacy competition first place winner and John Marshall alum, Michael Bauer also works.
Participation in our trial team and ADR programs does more than just give you an opportunity to hone your legal skills in a competitive environment. It also showcases the caliber of preparation, professionalism and dedication of our students and coaches. Tryouts for Fall 2009 trial teams is currently scheduled for the second week of the fall semester. Hope to see you there!
Over the weekend The John Marshall Law School’s Mediation team competed in the American Bar Association Representation in Mediation Competition at the law offices of Dykema Gossett in Detroit, Michigan. Team members Bill Kalbac and Elaine Vullmahn finished in fourth place.
Congratulations to coach Ian Bucciarelli, current team members Donyel Perry, Michael Lichner, Rachel Rauen, William McIntosh and Anna Shannon. Special thanks also to Liz Simon and to recent graduate and former team member Curtis Vosti.
Tryouts for next year's team are scheduled for November.
Wanted:
This will be a fun learning experience and does not require any prior trial advocacy knowledge. Your duties will include keeping time, delivering appropriate documents to the judge, and being a student representative for John Marshall. We greatly appreciate your support, and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Well, the competition is quickly approaching. With only two weeks to go, we have 45 members of the Chicago legal community volunteering to help evaluate the performances of the 1Ls during our annual competition. From judges, to assistant state’s attorneys, to lawyers in the private sector, it’s always great to see former alumni as well as some new-comers to the John Marshall family donate their time to help our students.
For the first time this year competitors may submit clarifying questions regarding the competition process and trial problem. The answers are then posted on the 1L website and we hope this alleviates any confusion. Questions may be submitted to Jordan Rofkin at 5rifkin@stu.jmls.edu. Stay tuned to find out the defendant’s fate…
The Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution, in conjunction with the Trial Advocacy and Dispute Resolution Honors Board and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Society are in the planning phase of a fall 2009 intra-school Client Counseling Competition for full-time second semester January start 1Ls.
