   Requirements

 


Basic

  • Complete the first year of academic study (29 credits)
  • No rank requirement

 

 


 

 

Judicial

  • Complete the first year of academic study (29 credits)
  • rank in the top 25% of the class, or be in the top 33% of the class and a member of one of the school's honors programs

   Work hours required - Basic and Judicial

 

 

1 or 2 credits = 120 hours
        3 credits = 180 hours
        4 credits = 240 hours

 

 

All hours to be completed within the start and end dates for the semester. Work hours performed before or after the semester do not count towards the hours required.

 

  

   Getting Started 

 

Basic

  1. Review the online directory for potential placement opportunities.
  2. Contact the agency as directed in the listing to apply for a placement.
  3. When the agency selects you as an extern, and complete the Basic Externship Application online to register for course credit. 
  4. Follow the instructions for the Basic Externship Application regarding how to submit a copy of your resume. Once approved, the center will register you for the appropriate clinic.

 Judicial

  1. Complete the Judicial Externship Application online.
  2. Follow the instructions regarding how to submit a copy of your resume, official or unofficial transcript, and a writing sample that is to accompany your application.
  3. The Program Director will submit your application to placement opportunities that meet your profile. You will be contacted by the judge if an interview is to take place. There is no guarantee that your application will be accepted for a placement.
  4. Once you have interviewed for a placement and accepted, the center will register you for the Judicial Clinic

Assignment Clarification

Understanding what is expected of you when you receive an assignment is essential to producing quality work. Download and save this checklist to help you make the most of your externship experience.

 

 

 

Placement Contact Information

Once you start your externship, we need to update your file with the contact information for the Supervising Attorney or Judicial Clerk who oversees your activities - your Field Supervisor. Use this online form to submit that information. Update this information at any time during your externship should there be a change in Field Supervisor.

 

   

 


 

 Timesheets

Once the semester begins, you will need to complete timesheets on a weekly basis. The Field Supervisor must sign the timesheet before you turn it in.

  • BASIC AND JUDICIAL EXTERNSHIPS: Deliver the timesheets to the Center's office - Room 411.

 

   

 


 

Evalution 1

At the mid-point in the semester, your Field Supervisor is to complete Evaluation 1. If your instructor has not provided you with the evaluation form, download this copy and give it to your Field Supervisor.

  • BASIC EXTERNSHIPS: Deliver the completed evaluation to the Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution - Room 411 - or by fax: 312.427.9974.  Basic Externship - Evaluation 1
  • JUDICIAL EXTERNSHIPS: Do not complete Evaluation 1. Go to Evaluation 2.

 

Evaluation 2

At the end of the semester, your Field Supervisor is to complete the final evaluation, Evalution 2. If your instructor has not provided you with the evaluation form, download this copy and give it to your Field Supervisor.

Student Placement Evaluation

Students in both the Basic and Judicial Externship Programs are to complete the Student Placement Evaluation at the end of the semester. The feedback received from students in this evaluation are extremely useful in assessing the effectiveness of placement opportunities extended through this program.  COMPLETE THIS FORM AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER OR WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR EXTERNSHIP.

 
   
 Site Visits

A brief site visit will be conducted at your placement once during the semester. You will receive instructions from your Clinic Adjunct Professor about how and when to schedule the site visit.
