Complete this form if you are seeking a placement in the Local Government Clinic, Prosecution Clinic, Defender's Clinic, Immigration Clinic, or IP Clinic.
A student must receive authorization from the externship program director to enroll in an Externship Clinical Course. For Basic externships, a student must have completed the first year of academic study (here at JMLS that means 29 credits) in accordance with ABA requirements. This form and the information provided herein serves as the student's request for authorization. If authorization is granted this completed form will be sent to the Records Office and thereafter the student will be enrolled in the course. The classroom component of the course is mandatory and normally offered on Tuesdays from 5:00 to 5:50 pm. Hours must be worked during the dates of the semester.
If you are accepted for an externship placement to receive credit, you must recognize this as an employment situation, albeit without compensation, and conduct yourself accordingly. Your employer, the field supervising attorney, and the Director of the Externship program must be listed on the Character and Fitness application form regarding prior employment and supervisors.
